# The studies behind the pages.

Original experiments, clinical trials, reviews and the dated regulatory record, with their different roles kept visible.

## Using the sources

Each entry describes the source in the context of these pages. The linked record supplies the original publication details. Study settings matter: a human cell line is not a group of treated participants, and an observational cohort does not test the effect of assigning a treatment.

The sources are grouped by subject. Epitalon and telomere findings share several papers, while the MOTS-c and NAD+ pages follow different experimental questions. Reviews gather earlier work and help show the limits of the field; they do not replace the original studies or supply new clinical outcomes.

The full URL is preserved for every record. These entries cover all external scientific and regulatory sources cited on the site.

## Epitalon and telomeres

### [Melatonin production in rat cells https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/22816096/](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/22816096/)

Khavinson and colleagues, 2012. A cultured rat pineal-cell experiment examining melatonin production and proteins involved in that process. It supports the discussion of a hormone-related mechanism, without measuring a person’s sleep or next-day function.

### [An overview of epitalon https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/40141333/](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/40141333/)

Araj and colleagues, 2025. A review of the synthetic peptide’s development and proposed cellular actions. It places the melatonin and aging experiments together while noting limited physical and chemical characterization, an important limit on broad interpretations.

### [The early fibroblast experiment https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/12937682/](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/12937682/)

Khavinson, Bondarev and Butyugov, 2003. Human fetal fibroblasts grown in culture developed telomerase activity and longer telomeres after exposure to Epithalon. The human origin of the cells does not make this a human treatment trial.

### [Normal cells and cancer-cell lines https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/40908429/](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/40908429/)

Al-Dulaimi and colleagues, 2025. A laboratory study comparing telomere changes in normal human cells and breast-cancer cell lines. Different maintenance pathways were implicated, making the cell context essential to interpreting both the finding and the safety concern.

### [The older-adult extract report https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/14523363/](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/14523363/)

Khavinson and Morozov, 2003. An observational report involving older adults and pineal and thymus extracts. It concerns epithalamin rather than synthetic epitalon, with limits from the nonrandomized design that prevent a causal conclusion about longer human life.

## MOTS-c

### [The founding cell and mouse work https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/25738459/](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/25738459/)

Lee and colleagues, 2015. Experiments identifying MOTS-c and connecting its signaling effects with glucose handling and insulin sensitivity. The obesity and insulin-resistance findings discussed here came from mouse models, not human weight-loss or diabetes treatment trials.

### [Exercise responses and mouse performance https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33473109/](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33473109/)

Reynolds and colleagues, 2021. Work on naturally occurring MOTS-c responses to exercise and the effects of administered MOTS-c on mouse performance. Running, grip and gait outcomes remain distinct from an established human fitness benefit.

### [Signaling during cellular stress https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/29983246/](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/29983246/)

Kim and colleagues, 2018. Cell experiments following MOTS-c into the nucleus during metabolic stress and examining gene regulation. This provides a mechanistic account of stress signaling rather than evidence that a prepared peptide treats fatigue in people.

### [The CK2 target https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/39559755/](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/39559755/)

Kumagai and colleagues, 2024. Cell-free and mouse experiments identifying casein kinase 2 as a direct target and describing different responses in muscle and fat. Tissue-specific findings help refine the mechanism without establishing human efficacy or safety.

### [A review of metabolic signaling https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/36670507/](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/36670507/)

Wan and colleagues, 2023. A review bringing together MOTS-c studies involving energy conditions, stress responses and aging. It provides context across experimental settings while leaving the need for direct human treatment evidence visible.

## NAD+

### [How NAD+ is made and used https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33353981/](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33353981/)

Covarrubias and colleagues, 2021. A review of NAD+ metabolism, its role in energy reactions and its consumption by signaling enzymes. It explains the biological interest while keeping the underlying pathway separate from claims about supplement or infusion benefits.

### [NMN and walking distance https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/36482258/](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/36482258/)

Yi and colleagues, 2023. A randomized, placebo-controlled oral NMN trial in middle-aged adults reporting blood NAD+, walking and quality-of-life outcomes over 60 days. Its population, short duration and oral route limit broader claims about lasting function or infusions.

### [NMN and muscle insulin sensitivity https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33888596/](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33888596/)

Yoshino and colleagues, 2021. A 10-week trial in postmenopausal women with prediabetes. Muscle insulin sensitivity improved, while body composition and HbA1c did not change. The unchanged outcomes help define the scope of the observed effect.

### [NR and blood NAD+ https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31278280/](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31278280/)

Conze, Brenner and Kruger, 2019. An eight-week placebo-controlled trial of oral nicotinamide riboside in healthy overweight adults. It contributes blood-marker and short-term tolerability findings, rather than evidence of longer life or long-term safety across different health conditions.

### [The wider human trial picture https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/41083806/](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/41083806/)

Vinten and colleagues, 2025. A review of human NAD+ precursor supplementation describing limited clinical efficacy and gaps in tissue-specific measurements. It places individual positive trials alongside the less consistent evidence for broader health and aging outcomes.

## Regulatory record

### [Withdrawn nominations and safety concerns https://www.fda.gov/drugs/human-drug-compounding/certain-bulk-drug-substances-use-compounding-may-present-significant-safety-risks](https://www.fda.gov/drugs/human-drug-compounding/certain-bulk-drug-substances-use-compounding-may-present-significant-safety-risks)

U.S. Food and Drug Administration, page current as of April 22, 2026. The table lists epitalon and MOTS-c among substances nominated but withdrawn, with safety concerns retained. Withdrawal does not establish clearance, Category 1 status or approval for compounding.
