# Telomeres are one part of aging.

Longer chromosome ends are a cell finding. Their meaning depends on the cells and the wider safety question.

## What telomeres do

Telomeres are protective stretches at the ends of chromosomes, the structures that carry genetic material. They are involved in how cells continue to divide. Telomerase is an enzyme that helps extend those ends. This gives researchers a measurable process to study, but telomere length alone cannot describe a person’s health or future lifespan.

Epitalon’s reputation in longevity discussions draws heavily on experiments involving this process. The [review of its proposed actions](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/40141333/) brings together work on telomerase, melatonin and other cellular pathways. The settings range from cell culture to animal work, with important gaps in human evidence.

Two distinctions organize the evidence: human cells are different from treated human participants, and a longer-lived cell is different from a longer-lived person. Both matter when an experimental result becomes a broad anti-aging claim.

## The human-cell experiment

In [Khavinson and colleagues’ 2003 study](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/12937682/), human fetal fibroblasts were grown in culture. Fibroblasts are cells that make supporting tissue. The cells initially lacked detectable telomerase activity. Adding Epithalon, a spelling of epitalon, induced the enzyme’s catalytic component, telomerase activity and telomere elongation.

The result is about cultured cells and the maintenance of their chromosome ends. No person received a treatment in that experiment. Describing it as a human longevity trial would change both the subject studied and the outcome measured.

The distinction is not a reason to dismiss the finding. It identifies the next questions: whether the effect occurs in relevant tissues, what else changes, and whether any benefit can be achieved safely in a whole organism. The cell experiment does not settle those questions.

Telomere: a protective chromosome end. Telomerase helps extend chromosome ends. This process does not establish longer human life.

## The cancer-cell finding

The [2025 study by Al-Dulaimi and colleagues](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/40908429/) examined normal human cells and breast-cancer cell lines. Epitalon lengthened telomeres in both settings. In normal cells, the work linked this to telomerase activation. In the cancer-cell lines, another route called alternative lengthening of telomeres was prominent.

Alternative lengthening is a different way cells can maintain chromosome ends. Similar measurements therefore reflected different processes in different cells. The word “longer” gives too little detail to establish that the change was helpful.

This is a safety concern to investigate, rather than evidence that epitalon causes cancer in people. It also prevents the normal-cell finding from serving as reassurance by itself. Long-term human outcomes cannot be inferred from either part of this laboratory study.

## What the older human study used

The [2003 report on 266 older adults](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/14523363/) followed participants for six to eight years and reported lower mortality associated with epithalamin, alone or with thymalin. Epithalamin is the cattle pineal extract. Thymalin is another gland extract. Neither name identifies synthetic epitalon.

The study was observational, without random treatment allocation or a placebo comparison. That leaves open whether the groups differed in ways that helped explain the outcome. The material difference adds a separate limit: an extract result cannot establish the effects of a defined synthetic peptide.

Keeping these limits visible allows the report to be discussed accurately. It cannot be joined to the cell-culture result as if the two studies together proved that epitalon extends human life.

## What remains to be established

A persuasive human benefit would require direct measurement of meaningful outcomes and an adequate account of safety. The literature discussed here does not establish that extending telomeres with epitalon improves health, prevents illness or adds years of life.

Epitalon has no FDA-approved human indication. Missing long-term safety evidence matters especially when the proposed action involves pathways used by dividing cells. Animal findings in selected tumor models do not replace broad safety testing, and the cancer-cell observation cannot be converted into a prediction of any individual’s risk.

Sleep is a separate question. The [pineal-cell work](/epitalon) measures melatonin-related activity, while the telomere work measures chromosome-end maintenance. Neither shows that a sleep effect and a longevity effect occur together. The original sources are collected on the [references page](/references), with each study’s setting made explicit.
